GUNTHER WINS WWE’S INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Gunther won the WWE Intercontinental Championship

Gunther (formerly known as WALTER on NXT) is the new WWE Intercontinental Champion. On tonight’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown Gunther defeated Ricochet after connecting with a shotgun dropkick and powerbomb. Ricochet’s title reign lasted just over three months after defeating Sami Zayn for the title in early March. Gunther was called up NXT 2.0 this past April.

After signing with WWE in early 2019, Gunther debuted on the NXT UK brand before moving over to the NXT brand in 2022 where his ring name was changed to Gunther. He is a former NXT United Kingdom Champion for which he holds the record for the longest reign at 870 days, which is the longest championship reign in WWE history since 1988.
