Adam Joseph Copeland is a 49-year-old professional wrestler from Orangeville, Ontario, Canada. Better known as his ring name, “Edge,” Copeland is currently signed with WWE and he performs on the company’s SmackDown brand.

Copeland started his wrestling career in Toronto in 1992. From there, he working on the independent circuit in Ontario and the Great Lakes region of the United States. Copeland worked for WWF (now WWE) house shows before heading to Calgary, Alberta where he was trained by WWF Superstar, Bret Hart.

Edge’s WWF Debut

In 1997, Copeland signed a developmental contract with WWF and made his television debut on RAW on June 22, 1998 as “Edge.” Copeland’s childhood friend and tag team partner William Jason Reso (ring name “Christian”) had also signed with WWF and together, along with wrestler Gangrel, formed “The Brood.”

In 1998, he won his first singles championship when he defeated Jeff Jarrett for the Intercontinental Championship. He lost the title the following night at Fully Loaded. Later that year, Edge and Christian began their longtime feud with the Hardy Boyz and became the number one contenders for the WWF Tag Team Championship. At Wrestlemania 2000, Edge and Christian beat the Hardy Boyz and the Dudley Boyz in a triangle ladder match to win the WWF Tag Team Championship title. They would go on to be Tag Team Champions six more times throughout their careers.

Edge’s Championships

In the early 2000s, Edge emerged as a powerful singles competitor. He won the 2001 King of the Ring tournament, the WCW United States Championship, the Intercontinental Championship, and the World Tag Team Championships with various partners.

From 2005 to 2010, Edge had an impressive list of accomplishments. He was the winner of the first Money in the Bank ladder match and he won the WWE Championship four times. He also won the World Heavyweight Championship five times defeating an impressive list of wrestlers including the Undertaker, Batista and John Cena. In 2010, Edge also won the Royal Rumble match and in 2011, he became the World Heavyweight Champion again.

Edge’s Retirement

On an episode of RAW in April 2011, Copeland gave an emotional speech to the audience explaining he had sustained serious injuries throughout his wrestling career. These injuries included a neck injury and cervical vertebral fusion. He said an MRI revealed a diagnosis of cervical spinal stenosis and that he was being forced into retirement. His injuries were so serious that if he fell the wrong way, he could end up being paralyzed or even die.

Edge’s Return To WWE

In January 2020, after a 9 year retirement, Edge entered to Royal Rumble match but was eliminated by Roman Reigns. A feud between Edge and Randy Orton erupted the following night on RAW and resulted in a match at Wrestlemania 36 and continued until WWE’s Backlash where Orton defeated Edge. During the match, Copeland suffered a torn triceps that required him to have surgery.

After a seven-month hiatus, he returned to WWE TV on the January 25, 2021 episode of RAW. He declared that he would enter the 2021 Royal Rumble match. Edge won after entering first, by last eliminating Randy Orton. With this victory, he became the eighth man to win the Royal Rumble match twice. The following night on RAW, Edge, with the help of Alexa Bliss, defeated Orton to end their feud.

Edge Challenges Roman Reigns

At Elimination Chamber 2021, he attacked WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns with the spear, making his decision to face him at WrestleMania 37. At Fastlane in March, Edge attacked Daniel Bryan, costing him the title. On the March 26 episode of SmackDown, Daniel Bryan was added to the match, making it a triple threat match.

At WrestleMania, Edge ultimately lost the match to Reigns following the assistance from Jey Uso. After a two-month hiatus, Edge made his return on the June 25 episode of SmackDown, attacking both Reigns and Jimmy Uso. The following day on Talking Smack, it was announced that Edge would face Reigns for the Universal Championship at Money in the Bank. At Money in the Bank, Edge was unsuccessful in capturing the title due to interference from Seth Rollins.

Over the following weeks, Edge and Rollins kept confronting and attacking each other until the August 6 episode of SmackDown, where Edge would challenge Rollins to a match at SummerSlam, which Rollins accepted. At SummerSlam, Edge defeated Rollins by submission.

Edge Drafted to RAW

 As part of the 2021 Draft, Edge was drafted to WWE’s RAW brand. On the October 8 episode of SmackDown, Edge challenged Rollins to a Hell in a Cell match at Crown Jewel after Rollins broke into his house the previous week. At Crown Jewel, Edge defeated Rollins to end their trilogy chapter feud.

Edge returned on the November 29 episode of RAW, where he was confronted by The Miz. The following week on RAW, after another heated verbal exchange between the two during a Miz TV segment, Miz challenged him to a match at Day 1, which he accepted. At Day 1, Edge defeated Miz with help from his wife, Beth Phoenix. At Royal Rumble, Edge and his wife Beth Phoenix defeated The Miz and Maryse in a Mixed Tag Team match.

The Judgment Day Stable

On the February 21st episode of RAW, Edge issued an open challenge for WrestleMania 38. The following week on RAW, his challenge was accepted by AJ Styles. But Edge attacked him, turning heel for the first time since 2010. During the buildup to WrestleMania, Edge debuted a new gimmick and a new entrance theme, The Other Side.

At night two of WrestleMania 38, he defeated Styles following a distraction by Damian Priest. He then formed a faction with Priest named The Judgment Day, where he claimed to wipe out anyone who did not fit in their “Mountain of Omnipotence.” At WrestleMania Backlash, Edge defeated Styles with the help of Rhea Ripley. Ripley then became the newest member of The Judgment Day.

At Hell in a Cell on June 5, The Judgment Day defeated Styles, Finn Bálor and Liv Morgan in a six-person mixed tag team match. The next night on RAW, Edge introduced Bálor as the newest member of The Judgment Day. Almost immediately Bálor, Priest and Ripley turned on their leader, attacking Edge and kicking him out of the group. Edge turned face in the process.

Edge Returns to WWE

At SummerSlam on July 30th, Edge returned to help The Mysterios win their No Disqualification match against The Judgment Day, cementing his face turn. He also returned with his original theme song Metalingus by Alter Bridge on the following episode of RAW. At Clash at the Castle on September 3rd, Edge teamed with Rey Mysterio for the first time in nearly 20 years to defeat The Judgment Day. After the match however, Dominik attacked Edge with a low blow and clotheslined his father Rey.

At Extreme Rules on October 8th, Edge lost to Finn Bálor in an “I Quit” match after interference from The Judgment Day. After he said “I Quit”, Ripley attacked his wife, Beth Phoenix with a violent con-chair-to, severely injuring her (kayfabe) and suffering his first loss in 2022.

After a three-month hiatus, Edge made his return at the 2023 Royal Rumble on January 28, 2023 as entrant #24. He eliminated Bálor and Priest before being eliminated by them after a distraction from Dominik Mysterio. At Elimination Chamber the next month, Edge and Phoenix defeated Bálor and Ripley in a mixed tag team match despite interference from Dominik Mysterio.

Edge Challenges For United States Championship

In a press conference after the event, Edge answered Austin Theory’s open challenge for the United States Championship. This marked Edge’s first title opportunity since Money in the Bank in 2021. On the following episode of RAW, Edge failed to win the title after interference from Bálor.

On Night 2 of WrestleMania 39, Edge defeated Bálor in a Hell in a Cell match, with Bálor suffering an injury after getting hit by a ladder thrown by Edge and had to be medically treated in the ring.
