ASUKA

Kanako Urai, better known by her ring name Asuka, is a 43-year-old professional wrestler from Osaka, Japan, currently signed to WWE, where she performs on the RAW brand.

Urai’s career skyrocketed as she captured numerous championships across multiple promotions. She became a highly decorated wrestler, winning titles such as the JWP Openweight Championship, NEO Tag Team Championship, Reina World Women’s Championship, Smash Diva Championship, and the Wave Tag Team Championship, solidifying her legacy as one of Japan’s most accomplished female wrestlers.

WWE Debut

In 2015, Urai signed a developmental contract with WWE, making history as the first Japanese female wrestler to join the company in over 20 years. She was assigned to WWE’s developmental territory, NXT, where she adopted the ring name Asuka.

Asuka made an immediate impact in NXT, defeating Bayley in April 2016 to capture the NXT Women’s Championship. She went on to remain undefeated throughout her reign, successfully defending her title against top competitors such as Nikki Cross, Ruby Riott, and Ember Moon. Asuka’s reign became legendary, surpassing significant records, including Goldberg’s undefeated streak and Rockin’ Robin’s 502-day reign as the WWF Women’s Champion. Her historic title run ultimately came to an end at 510 days when she was forced to vacate the championship due to a broken right collarbone.

Asuka’s Main Roster Debut

In September 2017, Asuka was called up to the main roster and assigned to RAW. In January 2018, she made history by winning the inaugural Women’s Royal Rumble match, earning a title opportunity at WrestleMania 34. However, at the event, Asuka’s undefeated WWE streak came to an end when she lost to Charlotte Flair via submission, marking the first defeat in her 914-day streak.

During the April 2018 Superstar Shake-up, Asuka was drafted to SmackDown. Later that year, in December 2018, she made history again by winning the SmackDown Women’s Championship in the first-ever Women’s TLC match. Her reign as champion lasted until March 2019, when she dropped the title to Charlotte Flair, ending her run at 100 days.
