Fergal Devitt is a 41-year-old professional wrestler from Ireland. He is currently signed with WWE and performs on Monday Night RAW under the ring name, Finn Bálor.

At the age of 18, Devitt started his professional wrestling career for the promotion, NWA UK Hammerlock. Shortly after joining the promotion, he won the NWA British Commonwealth Heavyweight Championship. He won the title a second time in 2005.

Finn Balor’s Early Career

After graduating from high school, Fergal’s wrestling career took off. He began touring Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States. In 2002, with Paul Tracey,  opened NWA Ireland, his own wrestling promotion based in Ireland.

From 2000 to 2006, Devitt competed in various independent promotions including Millennium Wrestling Federation and the National Wrestling Alliance. In March 2006, he signed a contract with New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). The next month, he made his NJPW debut against El Samurai, using the ring name Prince Devitt.

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship

On January 27, 2008, Devitt and his tag team partner, Minoru, won the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship. They lost the championship to Akira and Jyushin Thunder Liger in February, before regaining the title in July. After almost a three month reign, they lost the championship to No Limit (Tetsuya Naito and Yujiro) in October.

In 2009, Devitt teamed with Ryusuke Taguchi to form Apollo 55 and in July, at Circuit 2009 New Japan Soul, they defeated The Motor City Machine Guns to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship. Devitt and Taguchi were stripped of the title, after not defending them for 30 days in April.

Devitt entered the Best of the Super Juniors tournament in 2010 and defeated all of his opponents to advance to the finals where he defeated Marufuji to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship for the first time. A few weeks later, Devitt and Taguchi defeated Koji Kanemoto and El Samurai to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship for the second time as a team. Devitt defended his IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship for 364 days before losing it to Kota Ibushi.

The Bullet Club

In May 2013, he formed the stable, The Bullet Club, with Karl Anderson, Bad Luck Fale and Tama Tonga. In June, Devitt challenged Hiroshi Tanahashi for his IWGP Heavyweight Championship but failed to capture the title from Tanahashi in July.

Devitt continued wrestling for New Japan Pro-Wrestling until 2014. He won the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship a total of three times and held the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship six times in total.

Finn Bálor’s WWE Contract & Debut

Devitt signed with the WWE in May 2014 and in July, WWE announced Devitt’s signing with the company once he obtained a visa. He was assigned to NXT’s roster and given the name, Finn Bálor.

Finn Bálor made his debut match on October 23 where he and Itami defeated Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd. After feuding with The Ascension, Bálor and Itami defeated them at NXT TakeOver: R Evolution in December where he also debuted his signature body paint as his alter persona, The Demon.

In January 2015, Bálor entered an NXT Championship number one contender’s tournament, defeating Curtis Axel in the first round, Itami in the semi-finals and Adrian Neville in the finals at NXT TakeOver: Rival. Bálor received his title match against Kevin Owens in March but was unsuccessful.

Finn Bálor Wins NXT Championship

After defeating Tyler Breeze at NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable, Bálor received another title shot against Owens at the Beast in the East in Japan. Finn Bálor defeated Kevin Owens to become the NXT Champion. He also won the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament tying with Samoa Joe. Bálor’s reign lasted 292 days.

In 2016, Finn Bálor was moved to Monday Night RAW during the 2016 WWE Draft. On his first night on RAW, he defeated Rusev, Cesaro, and Kevin Owens in a fatal four-way match. Later that night, he beat Roman Reigns for the opportunity to become the first ever Universal Champion at Summerslam 2016.

Inaugural WWE Universal Champion

At SummerSlam, Bálor defeated Seth Rollins to become the first WWE Universal Champion. The following night he had to vacate his title due to a shoulder injury that would require surgery and four to six months to heal.

Finn Bálor made his return to in-ring action in March 2017 and in 2018, he became the Intercontinental Champion twice but lost it to Shinsuke Nakamura at Extreme Rules.

Finn Bálor’s Return to NXT

After a two month television absence, Bálor made his NXT return in October 2019 and the following month he began a feud with Matt Riddle leading to a match between the two being scheduled for NXT TakeOver: WarGames, where Bálor emerged victorious.

Since then, Bálor has been on a winning streak defeating Damian Priest at NXT TakeOver: In Your House, and then he defeated Timothy Hatcher at NXT TakeOver: 30. On September 8, Bálor defeated Adam Cole to win the vacant NXT Championship for the second time.

At NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver, Finn Balor lost the NXT Championship title to Karrion Kross.

Finn Bálor Returns To The Main Roster

With the return of fans to Friday Night SmackDown, Finn Bálor also returned to the main roster on July 16, 2021 where he attacked Sami Zayn. On the following episode of SmackDown, Bálor defeated Zayn in a match and then challenged WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns, to a championship match which Reigns accepted. A contract was signed the following week but before Bálor could sign, Baron Corbin attacked him. This led to a match the following week where Bálor emerged victorious.

Bálor faced Roman Reigns for the championship on the September 3 episode of SmackDown but failed to win the title because of the interference from The Usos. Following the match, a red light appeared over Bálor, teasing the return of his Demon King persona.

The following episode of SmackDown, Bálor appeared as his Demon King persona for the first time since June 2019. Subsequently, it was announced that he would face Reigns in a rematch for the championship at Extreme Rules. At the event, The Demon lost to Roman Reigns, marking his second loss as The Demon. As part of the WWE Draft in October 2021, Finn Bálor was drafted to RAW.

Finn Bálor Wins US Championship Title

On the February 28 2022 edition of Monday Night RAW, Bálor defeated Damian Priest to win the WWE United States Championship for the first time in his career. But just 49 days later, on the April 18th episode of RAW, Bálor lost the United States Championship to Theory.

At Hell in a Cell on June 5th, Bálor teamed with AJ Styles and Liv Morgan to face The Judgment Day (Edge, Damian Priest and Rhea Ripley) in a six-person mixed tag team match, but lost. On the June 6th episode of Monday Night RAW, Edge introduced Bálor as the newest member of The Judgment Day. However, Bálor, Priest and Ripley suddenly attacked Edge, kicking him out of the group and turning Bálor heel for the first time since May 2020.

Finn Bálor and Priest lost to The Mysterios at SummerSlam on July 30th. At the following month’s pay-per-view, Clash at the Castle, they lost again but to Rey and Edge. At Extreme Rules on October 8th, Bálor defeated Edge in an “I Quit” match following interference from The Judgment Day. On November 5th at Crown Jewel, Bálor, Priest, and Dominik defeated The O.C. (Styles, Luke Gallows, and Karl Anderson) in a six-man tag team match after interference from Rhea Ripley. Three weeks later at Survivor Series WarGames, Bálor lost to AJ Styles. On the following episode of RAW, The Judgment Day defeated The O.C. in an eight-person mixed tag team match.

At the Royal Rumble in January 2023, Bálor entered the Royal Rumble match at #20 but was eliminated by Edge. At Elimination Chamber in February, Bálor and Ripley lost to Edge and Beth Phoenix in a mixed tag team match. Finn, as his “Demon” persona, lost to Edge at Night 2 of WrestleMania 39 in a Hell in a Cell match. During the match, Bálor suffered an injury after getting hit by a ladder thrown by Edge and had to be medically treated in the ring.

The Judgment Day Wins Tag Team Titles

Bálor participated in a tournament to crown a new World Heavyweight Champion. On the May 8 episode, he defeated Cody Rhodes and The Miz in a Triple Threat Match. He then faced Seth “Freakin” Rollins in a singles match but lost. This led to a feud between him and Rollins, who had become the inaugural World Heavyweight Champion after defeating AJ Styles at Night of Champions. Bálor cited how Rollins cost him the Universal Championship from his injury in 2016 as a major reason for going after him. Balor then challenged Rollins to a title match at Money in the Bank. At the event on July 1st, Bálor lost to Rollins for the title after being distracted by Damian Priest. At SummerSlam in August, Bálor failed to win the title from Rollins despite interference from Priest, Dominik and Ripley.

On September 2nd, 2023, Finn Balor and Damian Priest defeated Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn to win the WWE Undisputed Tag Team Championship. This win also made Balor a WWE Grand Slam Winner. Balor has won WWE’s Universal Championship, Intercontinental Championship, and the United States and Tag Team Championships.
