Gutiérrez had several ring names before his uncle gave him the ring name, Rey Misterio Jr.

Rey Mysterio’s ECW Contract

In 1995, Mysterio signed with Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) and a year later, he made his debut on World Championship Wrestling (WCW). He defeated Dean Malenko on WCW’s Monday Night Nitro to win his first Cruiserweight Championship. His first reign lasted three months. At Halloween Havoc 1997, he won the Cruiserweight Championship a second time but lost the title in November ’97. Rey Mysterio held the Cruiserweight Championship title a total of five times in WCW and also held the Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship once and the WCW World Tag Team Championship three times.

After WCW was sold to WWE, Mysterio wrestled independently in Mexico. He returned in 2001 to the US and wrestled for independent promotions like IWA Mid-South, the Xcitement Wrestling Federation and the Heartland Wrestling Association.

Rey Mysterio’s WWE Debut

Mysterio signed with the WWE in 2001 and dropped the “Jr.” from his ring name. Mysterio also donned his mask again after Vince McMahon insisted he wear it (Mysterio had unmasked during his time in WCW). He made his debut on SmackDown on July 25 2002 in a winning match against Chavo Guerrero.

Mysterio teamed with Edge to form a tag team and in November 2002, the duo won their first Tag Team Championship. The team’s title reign ended a few weeks later at Survivor Series. In 2003, Mysterio defeated Matt Hardy to win the Cruiserweight Championship, his first singles championship. He held the title until September when he lost to Tajiri. Mysterio held the Cruiserweight Championship title two more times during his career so far.

From 2004 to 2007, Rey Mysterio won the Tag Team Championship title three times separately with Rob Van Dam, then Eddie Guerrero and finally, Batista. At WrestleMania 22, Rey Mysterio defeated Kurt Angle and Randy Orton in a triple threat match to win the World Heavyweight Championship. In 2010, at WrestleMania XXV, he beat JBL to become the Intercontinental Champion. Mysterio also won the World Heavyweight Championship at the on June 4 2010 at a royal rumble match for the second time.

He was released from his WWE contract in 2015 and he returned to Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide and worked for the independent circuits until 2018.

Rey Mysterio’s Return to WWE

Rey Mysterio returned to the WWE in 2018 as a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble. In September, it was confirmed that he had signed a two year contract. At Money in the Bank in 2019, Mysterio defeated Samoa Joe to win the United States Championship making him the twenty-first WWE Grand Slam Champion. Unfortunately, he had to vacate the title due to an injury from a post-match beating by Samoa Joe.

Mysterio returned to in-ring action the following month and in November he defeated A.J. Styles for the United States Championship. His reign lasted 31 days.

Rey & Dominik Mysterio Drafted to SmackDown

At the WWE’s 2020 October Draft, the Mysterios were drafted to SmackDown but their feud with Rollins didn’t end until November when Rey Mysterio defeated Rollins in a one on one match. At the Survivor Series 2020 Kickoff show, Dominik Mysterio was the last person eliminated by The Miz in a dual branded battle royal. From here the Mysterios began feuding with King Corbin. At the 2021 Royal Rumble event, Dominik eliminated Corbin before being eliminated himself by Bobby Lashley.

On the special WrestleMania edition of SmackDown, Dominik and Rey Mysterio faced Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode, Chad Gable and Otis, and The Street Profits in a fatal 4-way tag team match for the SmackDown Tag Team titles. They lost the match after Ziggler and Roode retained the SmackDown Tag Team titles.

Rey & Dominik Mysterio Win Tag Team Titles

At WrestleMania Backlash, Dominik and Rey Mysterio won the SmackDown tag team championship titles. This was Dominik’s first WWE Championship and this win made the Mysterios the first father and son tag team champions in WWE history.

On July 18th, 2021, the Mysterios lost the SmackDown titles at Money in the Bank 2021 to The Usos at the kickoff show. Their reign lasted 63 days. At SummerSlam, in a rematch against The Usos, the Mysterios failed to regain the titles.

The Mysterios Move to RAW

As part of the WWE Draft in October 2021, both Dominik and Rey Mysterio were drafted to Monday Night RAW. A month later, Rey Mysterio competed in and lost a ladder match contest to determine the number one contender for the WWE Championship. Seth Rollins Mysterio was later named as a member for Team RAW for the traditional Survivor Series showdown with Team SmackDown but was replaced by Austin Theory before the event took place.

On the December 20th episode of RAW, Rey and Dominik defeated the team of AJ Styles and Omos. On the January 17th edition of RAW, Rey Mysterio was announced as a participant of the 2022 Royal Rumble match. Later that night, he teamed with Dominik and The Street Profits to defeat fellow Royal Rumble competitors, Dolph Ziggler, Robert Roode, Apollo Crews and Commander Azeez. At the Royal Rumble, Mysterio entered the match at 23, eliminating Dolph Ziggler before being eliminated himself by Otis.

Following the Royal Rumble, Rey, along with Dominik entered into a feud with The Miz. At Elimination Chamber, Mysterio defeated the Miz via pinfall. The next night on RAW, The Miz challenged Rey and Dominik to a tag team match at WrestleMania 38.

The Mysterios Feud With Judgement Day

After a brief feud with Veer, the Mysterios began feuding with the newly formed stable The Judgment Day. Finn Balor and Damian Priest would continually attempt to have Dominik join the stable and betray Rey. But Dominik repeatedly deflected the duo’s attempts at having him turn on his father. . At SummerSlam on July 30th, the Mysterios defeated Bálor and Priest in a no disqualification match due to interference from a returning Edge, the Judgment Day’s former leader. On the following episode of RAW, they faced The Usos for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship in a losing effort.

The Mysterios Disband

At Clash at the Castle on September 3rd, Rey teamed with Edge to defeat Bálor and Priest. After the match, Dominik hit Edge with a low blow and hit a clothesline on Rey, thus disbanding the Mysterios. Rey was transferred to the SmackDown brand on the October 14th episode of SmackDown.

On Thanksgiving, Rey was attacked by Dominik and Ripley after Rey refused to let them into the house. On Christmas Eve, Dominik and Ripley visited Rey’s parent’s home. A confrontation started between Dominik, Ripley, Rey and Angie (Rey’s wife and Dominik’s mother) outside of the house. Dominik shoved Rey and Angie slapped Ripley. The police arrived shortly after and (kayfabe) arrested Dominik.

At the Royal Rumble on January 28, 2023, Rey was scheduled to enter the Royal Rumble match at #17, but was unable to presumably because he was being attacked by Dominik. On Valentine’s Day, Dominik and Ripley intruded on Rey’s and Angie’s Valentine’s Day dinner, where the latter party immediately gave way to the former. At the end of the dinner, Dominik fled the restaurant after two police officers entered the premise thinking there was a sting operation on him as “[he was] the most wanted man on TikTok.” Ripley was left to pick up the bill before leaving.

Latino World Order

WWE announced on March 10th that Mysterio would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as a part of the Class of 2023. On the March 24th episode of SmackDown, with the Mysterio family in attendance, Mysterio lost to LA Knight because Dominik interfered. Dominik would then go up to the Mysterio family and antagonize them to the point where Dominik told his mom to shut up. This resulted in Rey finally hitting Dominik, where a match between Rey and Dominik at WrestleMania 39 would be made official.

On the March 31st episode of SmackDown, before he would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame later that day, Rey reformed the Latino World Order by gifting LWO shirts to Legado Del Fantasma (Santos Escobar, Zelina Vega, Joaquin Wilde, and Cruz Del Toro). During the first night of WrestleMania 39, Rey defeated Dominik, thanks to the help of Bad Bunny.
