SUMMERSLAM 1989
SummerSlam 1989 was the second annual SummerSlam professional wrestling pay per view (PPV) event produced by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), now known as WWE. The event took place on August 28, 1989, at the Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey. As one of WWE’s flagship annual events, SummerSlam 1989 featured ten matches, including a dark match that was held before the live pay per view broadcast.
The main event was WWF Champion Hulk Hogan teaming with Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake to face “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Zeus in a high profile tag team match. Their rivalry had been building throughout the summer following the events of No Holds Barred: The Match/The Movie, making it one of the biggest attractions on the card.
The undercard also featured several memorable championship and grudge matches. The Ultimate Warrior defended the WWF Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship against Rick Rude in a rematch of their WrestleMania V encounter. “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase faced “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka, while Jim Duggan joined forces with Demolition (Ax and Smash) to battle André the Giant and The Twin Towers (Akeem and Big Boss Man) in a six man tag team match.
